Penryn Campus, Cornwall

Environmental sustainability and climate change are probably the greatest issues facing humankind in the twenty first century: they are a major focus of Exeter’s research and teaching activities and a key responsibility for the staff and students at our University.

In September 2025, the University launched its Climate Strategy 2025-2030, outlining how we will use the power of our education and research to create a sustainable, healthy and socially just future, and setting out our vision to use our strong interdisciplinary culture to lead meaningful action against the climate emergency and ecological crisis. This new strategy places direct emissions reduction at its heart and uses the latest climate science to realign our net zero target to 2050 across all scopes.

Our Penryn Campus is a shared campus, managed by FX Plus on behalf of the University of Exeter and Falmouth University. Our Key Performance Indicators include our share of data from the Penryn Campus.

Our approach to meeting net zero

The main objectives of our Climate Strategy 2025-2030 are to:

  • Achieve net zero with a focus on reducing our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions at source and only use insetting for dealing with residual emissions (maximum 10%)
  • Be a regional, national and international leader in decarbonisation and support delivery of our Strategy 2030 commitment ‘to lead meaningful action against the climate emergency and ecological crisis’
  • Foster a whole-institution approach, harnessing the expertise, skills, ideas and experience of our University community
  • Seek progress through partnerships, recognising the strength and value of collaboration in addressing global challenges

In the near-term, our target is to reduce emissions by 26% by 2030 from a 23/24 baseline for all scope 1, 2 and 3 categories, except international student out-of-term travel.

In the long term, our target is to reduce absolute emissions across all scopes, including international student out-of-term travel, by at least 90% by 2050 and use insetting to achieve the balance to net zero.

You can read the University’s 2024-25 Sustainability Report here.

The main themes of our sustainability work are buildings, travel, waste and recycling, food and drink, procurement, biodiversity, digital, changes to teaching and changes to culture.
